Former MLS Star Taty Castellanos Joins Lazio

Another MLS star is off to Europe: New York City FC striker Taty Castellanos is signing for Serie A club Lazio for a reported €15 million. The Argentina is now the most expensive sale in the club’s history, with the previous record sale being Jack Harrison’s €4 million move to Manchester City. Castellanos spent last season on loan with La Liga club Girona.

Castellanos joined New York City FC in 2018 on loan from fellow City Group club Montevideo City Torque, before making his loan permanent the following year. In his first full season, he bagged eleven goals, and, two seasons later, he led the league with 19 goals as NYCFC won MLS.

Last year he scored 13 goals in 17 matches, before joining recently promoted La Liga side Girona. He made headlines in April, scoring four goals in a shocking 4-2 win over Real Madrid. In total, he scored 13 goals in La Liga, the fifth-highest tally in the league. Castellanos also scored once in the Copa del Rey.

He will join Italian side Lazio, who finished second in the Serie A last year. Lazio’s striker, Italian international Ciro Immobile, scored 15 or more goals in six consecutive seasons before last year, when he found the back of the net just 13 times. Castellanos will compete for a starting spot with Immobile.
